Marcus Trebonius Drusus, a young Roman knight of the Ordo Equester of the Republic of Rome in 120 BC is extremely depressed and angry. He has just married a beautiful princess with all the physical attributes that any man would desire in a woman. However, there is a major problem. She has a lover, a barbarian giant whom she cannot abandon, even after marriage. He must marry her, to forge an alliance between the senate of Rome and her people through a treaty. Although he does not love her, the presence of his wife's lover arouses a jealous anger in him, as she insists on spending time with the giant warrior during their Long Journey to Rome, escorted by a troop of Roman soldiers. What will Marcus do and how can he preserve his dignitas or his reputation in Rome? How can he avoid the scandalous behavior of the princess and keep it from affecting his family? These are questions which plague him constantly. Will the Roman commander of the traveling party be able to control his men? How will he able to shield the princess from meeting other prominent Romans en route? What perils await them along their route?
