Among the visitors to the Verekers' family mansion was Lewis Bishop, a man whom everyone had reason to hate and fear. When he is suddenly shot dead in the darkness of the library, all he leaves behind is an unpleasant memory and a puzzle for the police. It is, of course, an Arthur Crook story, with that irrepressible and slightly unscrupulous detective in particularly fine form.
